If you're like me, prefer to use a VPN extension on your browser rather than having an additional software installed on your system, Surfshark is definitely one to try. It's easy to start, has an easy interface, and it can be used in as many devices as you like. Surfshark offers unlimited bandwidth for as low as $3.95 per month (if paid 12 months in advance).
Surfshark VPN - Supported Browsers/Devices
Surfshark extension is currently available on Chrome, Firefox and Android. It will also be available on other browsers in the future, but meanwhile iPhone, Mac (Safari) and Windows Edge users can set it up manually by installing a certificate. Full tutorial for each device is available such as;
- OpenVPN connection for macOS
- IKEv2 connection for macOS
- OpenVPN manual connection on Android device
- IKEv2 manual connection on Android device
- IKEv2 connection on iPhone and iPad
- Windows OpenVPN manual connection
Surfshark VPN can be installed on a router, and the tutorials are also available on the website.
Available Locations
Surfshark currently has 100+ servers across 14 (nicely selected) countries in Europe, Far East, Australia and 3 locations in the USA.
I hope you agree that 100 servers are more than enough; while some other VPN serves offer hundreds of locations all across the world, you often find a lot of the servers extremely slow or unusable, then it's a waste of your time finding the next available connection. Surfshark offers a reliable speed on whichever server you choose. The available locations are;
- Australia
- France
- Germany
- Hong Kong
- Iceland
- Italy
- Japan
- Netherlands
- Singapore
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- UK
- USA (Dallas, Los Angeles and New York)
Usability
Installing a browser extension doesn't take literally 2 seconds. Download it via Surfshark website, and the extension icon will appear on the top-right corner of your Chrome or Firefox browser.
Once you've set up your account with Surfshark, click on the extension icon to open a small popup screen. You're ready to connect. Changing the location is also simple. Choose an alternative location from the list and it will automatically disconnect from the current location and reconnect to the new one.
Security and Privacy
Surfshark VPN is located under the jurisdiction of British Virgin Islands where there's no obligatory data retention law. With its "No Logs Policy", it DOES NOT collect any data such as your;
- incoming & outgoing IP addresses
- any browsing or downloading history
- VPN servers that you use
- bandwidth used, session information, connection timestamps or
- network traffic.
The only information that Surfshark has no option but to store is your;
- Email address for your VPN connection purpose, marketing and troubleshooting and,
- Billing information only in case if a refund is requested.
Pricing Plan: 30-Day Money Back Guarantee
1 MONTH
$11.95/Mo
24 MONTHS
$1.99/Mo
12 MONTHS
$5.99/Mo
Unfortunately Surfshark does not offer a free trial, but it offers a 30-day money back guarantee.
Which means really, there's no point going for the 1 month plan. The 12 months' plan for $3.95 is very competitive, so if you're looking for a handy VPN extension with easy connection service, I would recommend you to go for this plan and pay $47.40 in advance.
You can cancel your account any time, but the money will not be refunded for the unused part of the ongoing service period. So if you change your mind, make sure to contact them to ask for a refund within 30 days.
Help & Support
Surfshark VPN offers 24/7 Customer Support including Live Chat. The representative will answer your questions within minutes, and also full email support is available using a webform. You can attach a file such as a screenshot, which is always a plus.
Surkshark is my favorite, the connection is always there and the price is very competitive. I bought $1.99 per month for 2 years. In over a year time there might be cheaper service somewhere else, like 99 cent per month maybe, but without worrying about renewing every year I just went for Surfshark. I’m very happy with this one.
Hi Niko, great to know that you’re happy with Surfshark. I’ve used it for a while myself and never had a problem with it either. As well as the connectivity and server locations, the price it’s offering is very good, I agree. Thanks for your comment.
I would not recommend Tunnel Bear. The wait time to connect to any country on this list is several minutes. They offer TB for free, and it seems the wait time is the same. I have contacted Tech Support a couple of times recently and have yet to hear from them. So the support for their product is poor.
Thanks Alisha for the info. Though post is about Surfshark VPN, I’ll make a note of it 🙂
I think Shark vpn is getting better. At first when I tried about 6 months ago it didn’t work. I had a terrible connection problem every time for the first few weeks.
Just as I was going to ask for my money back it started to get better. It has been great since and there are very helpful people in the support. I would give 7 out of 10.
Hi Anikit, thanks for the info. I’m glad to hear that their service is improving. As far as my experience was concerned I’ve had no problem in connection, speed or usability so everything must be in the right place now. Personally one of my favorites. Thank you for your comment & rating!
Your blog has a real excellent information. I am a Surfshark user and totally agree about the help and support they provide. Before I took up the VPN service I was a total technical novice. They taught me step by step on live chat. I’m so grateful that they were so patient with me. Connection is also excellent. I love Surfshark and would recommend it to anybody.
Hi Eve, thanks for your comment. Glad to hear that you’re happy with Surfshark. My experience with their support has been second to none too.
Thanks for sharing this such a great review. i am also using SurfsharkVPN for a while. I have used many vpn services for many years and I don’t think SurfsharkVPN service is the most encrypted but for sure browser extension works so well.
In order to enjoy web surfing with freedom, Surfshark is good enough for me. It is proved to be worth considering for anybody who want to bypass censorships. I would say Best Personal VPN provider is NordVPN but i select SurfsharkVPN within top 10.
Thanks Alisha, good to know that you approve Surfshark VPN. I appreciate your comment.
This VPN doesn’t work.
Hi, sorry to hear that – it seems to be working fine on me. I just contacted Surfshark helpdesk, and the current status is all good. Perhaps you can contact them via chat?
Hi Alexander, does this VPN support Netflix? I have gone through a quick search on Surfshark and I find it very easy. But I don’t know whether it supports Netflix. Let me know if you have the answer with you.
Hi Sasha, I just asked the help desk your specific question; currently Surfshark VPN supports Netflix USA and Japan. But it doesn’t support others, Netflix UK for example. Something I failed to mention in my post. Thanks for bringing it to my attention! Any other questions please don’t hesitate to get back to me.
I’ve never heard of shark vpn. I can’t find any other reviews. is it new?
Hi Rowetta, yes it’s pretty new. If you have any other questions or doubts, please don’t hesitate to ask me any time. Thanks for your visit.
I use NordVPN. It has so many servers and locations. I’ve had it for over 2 years, had no problem with it.I think it charges more if you pay every 6 months or 12 months but I paid for 2 years when it was running a discount promotion, I seem to remember I only paid $40 for 2 years. I recommend it.
Hi Marianne, thanks for your comment. I’m actually a Nord user too, and I agree, it never disappoints me. NordVPN is slightly more expensive than Surfshark unless as you say, you pay for 2 years in advance. It also offers a browser extension option which is handy. To me the number of servers is unimportant so Surfshark sounds pretty good too.
14 locations in total will be definitely enough for me, hands down. Some vpn’s have so many including Africa, and Arab countries, India or South America that very few people need to access. To be frank Websites like yours are written in English. Assuming the readers are predominantly English speaking why do anyone look to check up other languages? I only need USA. Perhaps T1 countries.
Hi Suman, personally I rarely log on to other countries rather than T1, so I do agree with what you say. But there’s a demand by many who either wish to access to various countries across the world or wish to mask their identity by deliberately faking their IP address. Otherwise Surfshark VPN offering 100+ server locations is great in my opinion. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate your input.
