It’s surprising to see how many businesses don’t pay too much attention to the quality of their internet service. But it can affect their operations in ways they can’t even imagine. Not only can it affect production, but it could go as far as affecting your brand image negatively. Bad internet could also ruin your internal operations and make things like using cloud services much more difficult. Let’s take a look at some of the different ways internet quality can affect your business.

4 Ways Internet Quality Affects Your Business

It Can Affect Productivity

The most major thing your internet service will affect is productivity. Your meetings with employees won't have to be longer than expected because you keep getting disconnected when you have good internet. No worries about lagging and clipping either. People will be able to share documents much faster within your organization and download files either from their inbox or the cloud much more easily. Large files will be uploaded in seconds instead of minutes, and you won't have to worry about super long files taking forever to download. These are all things that could give you a significant strategic advantage.

If you're in a business that relies a lot on cloud services or routinely has to work on large files, it would be a good idea to start looking at fiber internet.

It Can Affect Employee Morale

A lot of people don't realize how bad internet can start sapping away your team morale. Having to wait for things to load or getting reprimanded when a file takes too long to be uploaded because of the shoddy internet can be frustrating. When employees cannot access the tools and information they need to do their jobs, they are less productive. This can result in missed deadlines, errors, and rework. In some cases, it may even be necessary to bring in temporary staff to help pick up the slack.

And if the issue remains unfixed, you can expect many of your employees to start being disgruntled. They could even lose respect to the point that they decide to leave. So, if you hear grumblings in your organization about the internet, take them very seriously and consider making the switch to a better service right away.

It Can Affect Your Brand

Affect Your Brand

If you can’t have meetings with clients without them being marred by lag, you will have a very hard time projecting a professional image. This could be particularly damaging if you’re in a line of business where personal interaction with clients is very important, like consulting, for instance.

Doing something as simple as moving to a better, faster internet will make a world of difference and will remove the stress of not knowing if you’ll even be able to complete your next meeting because of a bad connection.

It Can Cause Interruptions

Internet service can be bad enough to put your entire business at a standstill. If you have multiple employees that need to upload or download big files at once, you could have to deal with massive bottlenecks. That's when you don't get full outages.

In other words, a bad internet connection can lead to lost revenue. If customers cannot purchase products or services online or if orders cannot be processed due to an unreliable connection, businesses will miss out on potential sales. In some cases, businesses may also be charged higher fees from their internet service provider for having an unreliable connection.

How To Fix a Bad Internet Connection

If your business is suffering from a bad internet connection but you don't have a dedicated IT team or specialist to look into, there are a few things you can do to try and improve the situation. First, Google the name of your ISP (internet service provider) or contact them to see if there are any outages in your area. If not, then the problem is likely with your equipment or connection.

There are a few things you can try to improve your connection:

  1. Check all of the cables and connections to make sure they are tight and secure.
  2. Restart your modem and router.
  3. Try using a different browser or device.
  4. If you have a wireless connection, try moving closer to the router.
  5. Check for interference from other devices or objects that might be causing interference with your signal.
  6. Update your modem and router firmware.
  7. Contact your ISP for help troubleshooting the issue.

Maintain Good Internet Quality

If you're running a business, an interrupted internet connection can be disastrous. Not being able to access your emails, files, or applications can cost you time and money. That's why it's important to have a backup plan in place in case your internet goes out. A generator, for example, can keep your business running even if the power goes out. And if you have a satellite internet connection, you can stay connected even if your cable or DSL goes down. Having a backup plan will help ensure that your business can weather any interruption to your internet service.
