Digital technology is developing quickly and much of it can be applied to the online shopping industry. With so many retailers now going online, they have to do something to stand out from the crowd and boast a bright future. Today we are taking a closer look at four of the most significant and disruptive ecommerce trends in the market.

#1 Faster Shipping 

One of the biggest differences between ecommerce sites is the time they take to make a delivery. A study recently conducted by subscriptionly.net shows that many people are starting to expect same-day delivery from many e-commerce retailers, especially if they’re dealing with a major company. Despite this, many retailers take as much as 5 working days to complete the shipping, while others will complete it in 2 or 3 days. Others offer the next day delivery and a select few can even manage the same day delivery. This speed can often be the difference between making a sale or not. 

Amazon is a company that has got its delivery service sorted, with members of Amazon Prime being able to receive a large number of products in just one day. Its fastest deliveries were for a thermometer (achieved in just 8 minutes) and for an ice cream (9 minutes). Many Prime members live in Amazon Now’s one hour delivery service zone, a zone that the company plans to expand even further in the coming years.

In the future, we can expect other ecommerce stores to up their game in delivery and logistics.

#2 Mobile Checkout 

In recent years, there has been a meteoric rise in mobile commerce, specifically mobile checkout and payment systems. The use of mobile devices to make a payment is often considered to be one of the most dramatic changes in the way that people shop. It has been made even easier by the many different mobile payments available today, such as Apple and Google Pay.

The world is gradually moving away from cash and heading into digital currency, therefore, it seems pretty inevitable that we will carry on seeing further developments and adoptions of mobile payment systems in the years to come.

#3 Voice Search 

Voice search is gradually becoming one of the leading drivers in the ecommerce space. One of the biggest drives of voice search has been in the sales of smart home appliances, such as Amazon Echo and Google Home. Even if sales are not made directly through using voice search, many people will have started the purchasing process by making search queries though a voice assistant or mobile device.

43% of consumers prefer a company that can personalize their experience, which is something that can be achieved in numerous ways. Many companies are experimenting with product recommendations based on purchases that the customer has previously made or looked at. At Home in the Country showcased product recommendations below the product that the customer was looking at and managed to increase revenue by 13%.

These are just a few of the many trends that are going to be changing the ecommerce industry in the coming years. Other changes that we could expect to see are multiple shopping channels, the possible use of drone delivery, the use of cryptocurrencies, and many others. If online retailers can keep up with these ever changing trends, then it is likely they will stay ahead in the busy industry.

  1. Very informative infographic, thanks. Especially mobile checkout is important as I myself use it to buy stuff at any shops like supermarkets every day. Fast delivery – getting faster and faster. I order something from Amazon and I can receive it in the same day. If the product is not what I wanted, I can return it the next day and they’ll come and collect it.
